Let us Pray for our Newly Elected Government

This week, Canada voted, and the Liberal Party of Canada was elected to form a minority government. It was a dramatic shift from a few months ago, when the Liberal Party was destined for near-complete destruction.

The results of the election were:

  • Liberals – 169 seats – 43.7% of the vote

  • Conservative – 144 seats – 41.3% of the vote

  • Bloc Quebecois – 22 seats (separatists in Quebec) – 6.3% of the vote

  • New Democratic Party – 7 seats (socialists) – 6.3% of the vote

  • Green – 1 seat – 1.2% of the vote

There will be many analyses of how and why the Liberals won and how and why the Conservatives lost. No matter how we feel about the outcome of the election, as Christians, we are called to pray for our elected officials.

1 Timothy 2:1–4 (ESV)

1First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

It is clear from scripture that we as followers of Jesus Christ have a responsibility to pray for our political leaders— whether federal, provincial, or municipal.

So, let me share with you seven principles for praying for political leaders from EFC (The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada).

  1. Pray for all leaders, regardless of their party policy or stances they hold.

  2. Pray that leaders would make decisions that contribute to the peace of all those under their authority.

  3. Pray that political authorities who are brothers and sisters in Christ would be able to stand firm in their Christian beliefs and convictions.

  4. Pray that those leaders who are not believers in Christ would come under the hearing of the gospel or the positive influence of other Christians in political power.

  5. Pray that all political leaders would do their jobs well, and that they would all come to a realization that they are God’s servants.

  6. Pray that political leaders would be able to balance their time between their position and their families well.

  7. Pray that political leaders would make decisions that allow the gospel to be freely shared.

It is important that we continue to pray for political leaders, no matter how we voted. Let us continually lift them up, asking God to watch over them and give them his wisdom.
