Christian EDC
Have you heard the term EDC? Everyday carry? Tons of YouTube videos are dedicated to the concept/philosophy of EDC. So, what is EDC?
Wikipedia states Everyday carry (EDC) or every-day carry “is a collection of useful items that are consistently carried on a person every day. The main reasons for having EDC are utility (usefulness), self-sufficiency, and preparedness: to help individuals improve simple everyday problem-solving, from the mundane (opening packages, minor repairs) to possible emergency situations such as first aid or self-defense.” Some of the most common EDC items include watches, pens, wallets, knives, firearms, flashlights, lighters, car and home key rings, mobile phones, multi-tools, tissues, medications, and personal care items.
You can fall into a rabbit hole of creating the perfect EDC, swapping, and updating each of your EDC items. But the purpose of EDC is to be prepared for situations when you might need some of the items you carry. You will never know how useful a small pocketknife (ex: Victorinox Swiss Army knife) is unless you start carrying one.
Jesus expected Christians to carry something every day, in Luke 9:23, Jesus said to all: “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”
So, what did Jesus mean? To follow Jesus means to become a disciple. A disciple is one who obeys everything Jesus commanded and taught. To know and experience God’s love & grace, to believe that Jesus is Lord & Saviour and to grow to become more like Christ every day.
To follow Jesus, we are told that we need to deny ourselves and take up his cross daily. That is to deny our old self and to submit to God’s will, pursuing after God’s purpose and plan. To take up the cross is to embrace hardship and suffering that comes in following Christ, living in contrast to the world’s values. It is acknowledging our weaknesses, and finding our strength in Christ, who is our eternal hope.
For us to follow after Christ requires us to be in God’s Word and communion with God in prayer. It is to be part of the body of Christ (church), devoting ourselves to apostles’ teaching, to fellowship, breaking of bread, and to prayer.
So, ask yourself, are you following Jesus, are you taking up your cross daily?
