Our prayers need to change.

Dear COAH,

Praying for my child's well-being is a natural behavior for any parent. We all want our children to have a respectful social position and live well rather than live in misery and need intervention. So, we pray for our children to grow up healthy, to do well in school, and to become competent in whatever they do. Most parents go beyond praying for their children; they try to create an excellent educational environment. They make sacrifices for their children, even moving to better school districts and living apart (as in the case of some Korean parents).

But now, our prayers need to change. We need to change the way we approach the whole thing. We need to stop praying like this, "Please help my child become successful. Instead, pray, "Please help my child become a good follower of Jesus. If our children gain the world, they will most likely lose Jesus. Pray that your child will live a life that glorifies God rather than a life of success that makes them comfortable.

I'm reminded of what Jesus said. "What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?" (Matt. 16:26). With the hard work of both parents and children, our children will be able to do well in whatever profession they choose. They will also live a good life. However, I've seen too many successful people who have walked away from the Lord. It's a stark reminder that worldly success can be a terrible thing, even a poison, and not a blessing.

Have you ever thought about the content of your prayers for your children and grandchildren? It's important to be careful what we pray for, as some prayers may be harmful. Instead of praying for our children to simply "do well in life," we should ask God to help them make the most of the talents they've been given and become significant members of society who glorify Him. We should also pray for their spiritual growth and that they build Christ-centered families. Success should not be measured by the world's standards, but rather from God's perspective. Let's start rethinking our prayers so that they align with His will.

Blessings,

Pastor Minho Song
